Narni - Land of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

In ancient Roman times travelers to Rome passed through Narni on the Via Flaminia.  It is said that the author C.S. Lewis got the name of the town of Narnia that’s mentioned in his children’s book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe from seeing  the name Narni in his atlas..  Sadly, we didn’t see any mysterious large wardrobes to allow ourselves access into the magical and sometimes scary land of Narnia.








While in Narni we did, however, see the Pont d’Augusto, the remains of a bridge believed to be one of the largest Roman bridges ever built. While less than half of it still remains, in its day is was 520 feet long and 180 feet high. Quite a feat considering it was built in the 1st century.











After visiting the bridge, we did a quick drive up to the ever-present fortress. Rocca Albornoz di Narni was built in 1367 to protect the town in medieval times. Unfortunately, it was not open when we arrives so we had to settle for walking around the perimeter.










We then made the obligatory stop in town for a walk about. Every town has its cathedral (or Duomo).  The Duomo in Narni was started in 1267 AD and uncharacteristically – like the Rocaa – was also closed to visitors. It still had a stunning bell tower that we could hear for miles.

Obidos

The town of Óbidos is located on a hilltop, encircled by a fortified wall. Óbidos remains a well-preserved example of medieval architecture; its streets, squares, walls and its castle are a popular tourist destination. The castle now houses a hotel.  Legend holds that Obidos was founded in 308 BC by the Celts. As the streets of Obidos are very narrow, cars are parked outside the walls -- we were able to park right next to the very cool preserved aqueduct. Originating in Usseira, the aqueduct it is 3 km long. Mycenae and the Tomb of Agamemnon …

  Familiar with the history of King Agamemnon, Austin enjoyed visiting the tomb of Agamemnon and the ruins of the palace. Unfortunately, over the years, the tomb has been raided and there were few treasures left to recover.   Agamemnon’s  Mycenaean fortress includes an entry ramp that is a long, steep climb to the infamous lion’s gate entry.  It is said that the gate was intentionally built to be steep so that it would be easier to defend the palace from marauders! Mycenae was considered to be a major centre of Greek civilization from 1600 B.C. to 1100 B.C.   Agamemnon was the commander in the Trojan War to return Helen back to Greece.  Agamemnon prepared a fleet of ships to carry the Greeks to Troy, however the winds were not favourable and he was unable to sail.
