Narni - Land of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
While in Narni we did, however, see the Pont d’Augusto, the remains of
a bridge believed to be one of the largest Roman bridges ever built. While less
than half of it still remains, in its day is was 520 feet long and 180 feet
high. Quite a feat considering it was built in the 1st century.
After visiting the bridge, we did a quick drive up to the ever-present
fortress. Rocca Albornoz di Narni was built in 1367 to protect the town in
medieval times. Unfortunately, it was not open when we arrives so we had to
settle for walking around the perimeter.
We then made the obligatory stop in town for a walk about. Every town
has its cathedral (or Duomo). The Duomo
in Narni was started in 1267 AD and uncharacteristically – like the Rocaa – was
also closed to visitors. It still had a stunning bell tower that we could hear
for miles.
