The Sleepy Village of Monteriggioni …
Monteriggioni began as a
defensive structure that withstood repeated attacks by the Florentines in the 11th century. Its 10 meter high walls and 14 towers surround a typical medieval town that can be seen for miles around.
With two main gates still in use today, this walled town was once a major stop on the pilgrimage trail to Rome. It is said that Monteriggioni was a sleepy town of farmers and sheep herders as late as the 1960's.
Today the village is home to local shops and restaurants. We stopped for a sandwich on the town’s piazza. Our lunch was fresh and tasty!
